Quilt Top Finished

Neptune Star Quilt Top is now complete and ready to be sandwiched together.

I must add that to this stage I have found this quilt quite rewarding and each week I can sit back and say I have achieved something. It seems like this quilt has come along in leaps and bounds, and todate without the need to use my friend Boris (the unpicker)

Neptune's Star

My Lovely Quilting teacher has designed a quilt from mainly a Jelly. The above is her completed Quilt and below is my colour selection.

With the lovely breeze blowing today I thought it was ideal to get the fabric washed and hung out.

The backing fabric I chose had a bad case of bleeding so it was into the wash bowl 6 or so times along with a handful of salt.

Here's hoping my colours will look as Good as Cheryl's when completed.

Bargello Quilt

Frustration and patience was the name of the game while making this Quilt. It was a quilt as you go hence I drew up a grid and had to line everything up and check and double check before I started sewing.

Boris My Quick Unpick became my best friend during the Quilting experience. Although I can pick out several little errors myself I am going to make another one to try and perfect my mistakes.
Being a small quilt I can use it for a lap quilt if required but will use it on the head rest of my lounge room arm chair.

Onwards and upwards now and hopefully the second one will be even better.

Looking forward to the new year and another quilting adventure awaits me.

Minka Star is Finished

Finally after a few months of just sitting and waiting to be completed My Minka Star Quilt is finally ready to be used. It was one of those things that got pushed to the back as all it needed doing was the final boarder being machine and then hand sown on.

My aim is to complete my Bargallo Quilt as you go Quilt before I start the next one in late January.

12 months along with my Quilting and 4 lovely quilts to show for it. Well the fourth will soon be completed and all I can say is "Why did I take so long to get into this lovely hobby".

Next year I am continuing going to my Quilting Group and our first project will be a Quilt made mainly from a Jelly Roll.

Craft Forum Day Out

After a cool start to the day if was off to Mrs Moos for a meet and greet day and a big thank you to all the wonderfully talented ladies who were there for making it a very memorable and enjoyable day. What would a Sewing Forum get together be if we didn't go and look in a near by quilting shop. The Patch Work Apple at Woodside was nearly bursting at the walls with the sudden influx of ladies. Then it was off to Melba's Chocolate factory before and enjoyable lunch was had at the Old Mill Market Lobethal. The remainder of the afternoon was spent back at Mrs Moos swapping ideas and looking at all the wonderful goodies everyone had made.

This is my little stash from today's outing. I haven't got any projects in mind but I did so love the fabrics I just had to have them.

The black fabric above I purchased in Adelaide during the week but when I found the other today I had to have it to add to the one day project.

Minka Star is Taking shape

There is a major layout blunder on one of the log cabin blogs below and thankfully it was picked up before I sewed them all into place. One of the blocks bottom row second from the left was laid out the wrong way. Half a turn out in fact which would have really stood out in the final quilt. Hopefully I may have picked it up myself as I went to sew it up. Thanks Sue for having keen eyes for me.

The correct layout is now above.

What with work, family commitments and life in general my Quilt is slowly starting to resemble what I imagined it to look like. In the ideal world (boy I wished I lived in it) it wouldn't take this long to complete. Ah well back to the sewing machine and sew a bit and iron a bit then repeat the process till I have all the blocks sewn together.

I settled on the name of Minka Star for this Quilt. Thanks to a dear young lady
called Minka.

Star Struck

This quilt belongs to my quilting teacher and when I saw it I was rather star stuck and knew I wanted to make one very similar to it. Her mother calls it "A migraine Quilt"

I am going to carry the star theme out and use black & white star material for my borders and slashings. I will still try and find a bright multi colored material for the 3rd border.

Here's hoping that with my selection of material other people will be star struck by my quilt.

It is very different to what I have done in the past but as they say "A change is as good as a holiday".

Log Cabin Material

With not much time on my hands to go out and really look for material for my next quilt I hit one Quilting Shop today and felt pleased with my purchases. My next quilt will be a Log Cabin Design and I intended having bright yellows and red's. What I had in my mind I couldn't find in the shop, maybe in only exists in my mind.
The Blue will be a border and the Black & White Stars for the center triangle/squares.

My Bits'n'pieces storage.

After carrying my sewing bits and pieces around in a biscuit tin for several weeks at my quilting group I thought there must be a better option. While walking around our local Bunnings (Hardware store) I found a storage case which I thought would be suitable.

The orange partitions in the case can be removed to hold longer/bigger items. It makes life simpler to have them all stored neatly in front of me for quick access and be able to find items at a quick glance. Great to pick up and take with me to quilting too. So far so good and as I use something I put it back in the case. For once I am organized.

I have slowly over the last 2 terms built up a collection of Rulers. Like all hobbies and interest it takes time and money to build up all our requirements. But I am getting there.

Rose Lap Quilt Completed

At last I have completed my Rose Lap Quilt. With still lots of cold nights ahead of us I am sure I will put this quilt to good use.

For my next quilting project I have picked a log cabin design. Another challenge awaits me as I venture into another learning phase of my life. As the saying goes "You are never too old to learn something new".

Inside Dog Coats

With the cold weather hitting us with gusto I decided that Missie (Silky Terrier) above and Ruby (Caviler King Charles Spaniel) below needed some warmth when we were not at home or during the night when we are tucked up snugly under our quilt.
With wet and wild weather yesterday I didn't get to the material shop but I bought a cheap Polar Fleece blanket and cut it up.

Hopefully they will appreciate them.

Still Quilting

The Border Around my quilt I quilted at 45 degrees. Hopefully by doing this I have also camouflaged the joins in my boarder.

Each of the Triangles in the Pin wheels I am quilting.

My shoulders were aching from the quilting so it is now a slower progress than what I would have liked.

Mitred Corners

The Quilt that we are currently working on has mitred corners. Something new to add to my brow as I have never done them before.

We are also putting our own Bias Binding around the quilt and as I only had a small amount of fabric left and I didn't want to purchase anymore I have several joins in mine.

Hopefully after this week it will almost be completed and then onto the next task. Not sure if another quilt or if it will be a large carry all to hold all our sewing quilting gear in it. Rulers, cutting boards ect.

Dogs High Visability Jackets

Missie and Ruby were both very reluctant little Models but once they are finished they will wear them proudly when away.

As we do a lot of caravanning and camping away from power & lights it is sometimes very hard to see our 2 little Dogs in a torchlight. Not that they wonder off too far.

Reflective strips & bone shapes and Fluro Orange Jacket was my solution to helping me find them in the dark.

Bring on the next camping weekend so we can try them out.
Shhhh I haven't told one sister in law yet but there is one in the making for her Sasha.

Lets hope they do the job that they are intended for.

Quilt No 2 Top

At the Half way point of sewing up Quilt no 2 top.

Quilt No 2 Top all but completed. All to be done now is the tidy up the edges and square the quilt off.

This quilt I feel more confident and am making great progress.

Quilt No 2 is Started

Pinwheel Blocks are made out of 4inch squares.

We sewed a 1/4" in from our pencil lines.

Then cut along the pencil lines.

Hey presto I now have 64 x 3 1/2' squares.
Off to my second class and hopefully more to report soon.

All Done

Finally My Quilt is all done...............Yeah. It took a bit longer than I had wanted to but hey I have learnt several things along the way by my mistakes. Hopefully now I won't repeat any of them in the future.

The underside of the quilt with some slight puckering that I am prepared to live with. What is done is done and I am not going to spend another number of weeks unpicking it.

Ted and Yasmin are quite content sitting under the quilt.

Today I bit the bullet and purchased my walking foot.

Now to work out which bit goes where.

Not Much is Happening

Not much has happened in the past couple of weeks due to a few things.

Been away with family and friends and a great time had.
Spend most of the time when home unpicking a few problems that I created for myself. Mainly due to the fact that I didn't have a Walking Foot for my sewing machine and I rushed in blindly and ploughed on ahead. Whoops big mistake when I looked at the underside of the quilt and lots of puckering. So nearly 3 weeks of unpicking and I am now content to live with the slight puckering I have left.

This week it will be off to the Sewing Machine shop to purchase the walking foot and then progress on with the quilt.

Classes start again Thursday evening and I will be starting on my second Quilt and finish this first one in my own time with help and assistance if needed.

Oh Yeah the one thing I have learnt from this is to have the right equipment for the right job as the unpicking isn't the most enjoyable part of the project.

Quilting of the Quilt

After having laid out and stretched into place it was time to flatten and smooth out the quilt, batting and backing.
Then it was all pinned into place ready for sewing and what a tedious job. I am now on the look out for a Quilters All Tool which I found a great help with closing the pins.

In the process of quilting and I am using a method called Ditch quilting which is sewn along the existing stitch line.

Bowl and Coaster

Yesterday I wanted something to do so I made up another fabric bowl and 2 matching coasters. I will make another 4 coaster thus making a set of six.

With a bit of luck I will make a few more to put away for Christmas Gifts.

Help So Many Choices

Once we have completed our current quilt it will be onto the next project. Yep the quilt above is the one we have chosen to do. Only thing is I have a problem as I can't decide which material I want to use and with what material. I have put a selection of what I found tucked away in my cupboard and seek your help please.
This quilt will be the size of a lap quilt.

1. Roses with green and maroon.

2. Roses with 2 different greens.

3. Roses with another green and maroon.

4. Roses and pale greens.

5. Red butterflies with Red/white polka dots.
6. Red Butterflies with the 2 green in the second from the bottom.

Help Please.

The Borders

This week it was sewing on the borders. Border one being the thinnest of the 3 borders.

Border two or the middle border.

Finally border 3 and all that is left now is too sandwich the batting and putting on the backing. The binding around the edge will be the same as the Third Border.

Oh yeh and some quilting over the top.

Finally The Blocks are together

After laying out and marking all the blocks it was time to start sewing. Great my quilt was finally looking somewhat like a quilt.

Plenty of ironing as I went and all is well. So I thought. When I laid the quilt out on the bed to look at it one row was out of line. Out with the stitch ripper and undid some of my hard work. I turned the strip around the other way and hey presto it worked. So much for carefully pinning it out before.

Finally after what seemed like an all day marathon the outer layer of my quilt was finished.

My New Bernina

This week I bit the bullet and purchased a new Bernina sewing machine. They have been a family favorite of my family for many years with both my Mother, sister and sister in law all owning one with much success. It has so many more features than my basic Janome which I have used in the past.

While relaxing in the Barossa over the weekend I ventured into a sewing shop and immediately fell in love with the machine and the price as Jenny was still selling it off at the Christmas special price and not the recommended retail price of today.

As you can see one happy sewer at the moment.

Stitch a Bit Unpick a Bit

Progressing along with my quilt. Last week I had to make 9 Patch blocks.
All strips cut and the sewing commenced nicely.

Blocks starting to take shape.

The pile was increasing at a nice rate.

Great I thought all done and ready for the next stage.

Only to find out that my 1/4 inch foot wasn't sewing a true 1/4 inch seem. My foot turned out to be faulty and Kim from the shop kindly swapped it over for the one they used in the shop for me. I spent time unpicking several of the blocks and resewing them as they were far too small.
Oh well bet it won't be the last time in my sewing time I have to unpick something.

But on a brighter Note the material above I purchased on my Day out with the girls.
Now to find something suitable to make with it. But not until I have my quilt out of the way.

School Tonight

Bags are packed and machine is raring to go.

The black bag at the back is my latest purchase from Spot Light and it contains my cutting mats, rules and whatever else may find it way in there. I thought it was the easiest way to carry all my gear without making a couple of trips to the car.

This morning while twiddling my thumbs waiting for a tradesman to arrive I decided to have a go at making one of these Octagonal Fabric basket. They are so simple to make I think there will be a few made as Gifts through out the year. Yep another trip to Spot Light coming up.

Snowball Blocks.

After cutting out 20 x 6 1/2" squares and 80 x 2 1/2" squares it was down to business to draw diagonal lines corner to corner on the smaller of the squares, pinning them right side together in each of the 6 1/2" square corners. Making sure the pencil lines formed a diamond pattern . I then stitched along the pencil lines.

Once sewn into place I folded and pressed the triangle back toward the corners.

Now time to trim away the middle piece of the triangle and trim block if necessary.

Once completed each snowball block should measure 6 1/2"

Unfortunately I missed my last lesson but hopefully after class this week I'll be able to catch up and not fall too far behind. Looks like a lot of extra homework coming up but that is life.

Quilt Update

No not the washing but just the material being rinsed and hung on the clothes lines before I could start the slicing and dicing.

And Guess what? I decided I didn't like the Blue toning I bought last week so it was back to Spot Light where I got some green tones and I feel far more comfortable with them.

At Last nights class we managed to cut out some of the material and I made up 2 of the Snowflake blocks. Hopefully over the next 8 weeks you will be able to keep up with my quilt's progress. Now to find time for my homework.

Quilting Class

The top picture was taken on my mobile phone of our Quilting Instructor's Quilt that we are going to attempt to make. I love the Rose pattern but unfortunately when I hit the shop this morning I was not able to find any Rose Design.

The Floral fabric will be my main focal one and the lighter one I will use as my backing.

I am still unsure on one of the Blues for my contrast pieces but I have a few days to think about it and maybe change my mind if I want. A couple of lovely ladies in the shop this morning said I had picked wisely but I am still not so sure myself.

P.S. I think I am going to enjoy this class and maybe even stop on to a more advanced one yet.

My First Attempt at a Quilt.

After cutting out numerous squares it was time to start to assemble them into bigger squares.

Once the squares were sewn up it was then onto making them into strips for the next stage.

This is a general idea of what the quilt will look like once it is sewn together.
The process is taking awhile to complete as work and going away have played a major factor in it but hopefully soon it will be finished and ready to use.

I will put 3 different colored green strips around the outside to finish it off.

Quilting classes start this week so it may get scrapped when I learn the correct way of doing it and not my way.

Back to School

After talking about doing a Quilters course I have bit the bullet and enrolled in a 10 week course. This time in 2 weeks time I will be happily on my way home from my first lesson. I have a craft bag on wheels to carry my materials etc in. I feel like a little kid going back to school and getting my goodies ready.

I tossed up several ideas before I came up with the idea of making a pin cushion and putting it into a clip sided container. I had no intention of sticking my hand into my bag and getting stuck with a wayward pin or two.

Not being sure exactly what we will be making I have a selection of fabric to choose from.
One thing about the course it will be held in the back of a Sewing Centre and I can make a made dash up stairs to the shop if I haven't got the required item. Being relatively new to quilting I am still unsure on what I will and will not need. But help is on hand.

My First Bag

On a recent caravan get a way to Coobowie, I happened to stumble across a Craft Fair and being one not to miss a Country Craft fair I was quick to go for a look.

I was impressed with what I walked into and bought a couple of items as a guide for me to make some for myself.

The top being one of my purchases and my first attempt at a bag is below.

Well as you can see if isn't quite the same size as the bought one. I had to cut and slice a mistake hence mine ended up smaller.

I have now found somewhere to purchase a pattern from so here's hoping the next one will end up the correct size.

My Sewing Area

Today we turned what was our spare single bedroom into my sewing room. Well actually I have been using it the past couple of weeks but today we got a new storage area set up.

Now for the fun of packing it with my newly purchased bargains that I have acquired.
Wonder if I could sneak the Spot Light bag full of Material into my cupboard without Sue missing it. Could be worth a try.

Hopefully now I have the area I will soon put it too lots of use.
Not forgetting my 4 legged mates lamb wool mat on the floor for them sleep on while I am busy in there.

I even managed to find an area to keep the ironing board close by and set up for those times when I need it. Don't we all just love our ironing.

Getting Expensive

Am I out of control or just a bargain hunter on the lookout for a bargain.
Spot Light have had a sale on Quilting Fabric and I have taken advantage of it.
All the materials I purchased were $3:00 a metre so I don't think I did bad after all.

I have decided that I won't visit Spot Light again in the near future as it is getting a bit on the expensive side. But then again my stock pile at home is looking great.

But then again you never know where my travels will lead me, and oh yeh I have to pass by Spot light on my way home from work.

What Next

I have the Fabric and now what do I do with it. I have several ideas for the above materials but the ones below where my bargain buys. All up I got 4 metres from the Remnant bin costing me $2:00. At that price I couldn't leave it there.

Although the stripe one may appear Bright I am sure in time I can tone it down with something else.

Little Basket

My first attempt at making a little basket. I scanned the net until I found a suitable pattern and then after visiting family over the weekend where I was shown how to use a Rotary cutter to cut out material it was all systems go last night.

After having made one I am now keen to get the other 3 that I have cut out done. I can see many uses for these little gems and can easily adapt the pattern to suit my needs.

By the way the Haighs Chocolates will be nice when we get into them.

Card Holder

Several years ago I made a Card Holder for my Christmas Cards, but sadly it wasn't big enough. Last year I made myself another one along with 6 others and thought I would share mine with you.

The First one which is covered in cards was made out of a large dog food tin covered in Nylon Ribbon used for knitting. The one with only a couple of cards on it was made from a Caterers Tin that had fruit in it and red wool wrapped around it to hold the cards in place. Being a bigger tin it allows for bigger and more cards.

They are not only colorful but easy to make.

Hello and please excuse me as I am a bit rusty with the Old Sewing Machine these days. It has been packed away and I don't think it has even had much sewing done on it. I replaced my old one a few years ago and I don' t think this one would even be run in yet.

Hopefully that will change in the near future as I am going to enroll in a 10 week Quilting course and also join a lovely bunch of ladies, could be men too but don't know in a Group Called "Stitches". Hopefully the guidance, support and encouragement of the others will give me the motivation to get off my backside and back behind the sewing machine.

I have my 3 sister in laws to thank for this sudden burst of enthusiasm as I am reading their Blogs and getting photos sent to me of what they have done. So now you can call me one of the flock as I am like a sheep and following the mob.
